Round 30 Nov 2008
U18 Boys 1-1 Doncaster
NSW won 4-1 after Penalties
After a two hour journey to Doncaster, we arrived in freezing conditions although it was not cold enough to deter Neston from playing.
At 3.30pm the match began on Doncasters slippery and icy water-based pitch. The pace
was crisp and flowed immediately from the start and Neston were quickly able to take control of the game. A dominant midfield of Matthew Newall, James Rigby, Tom Mothersdale and Tom Betts were able to take control
of possession most of the game. Continuously Neston moved forward and strove
to create a much earned goal. Creative runs from Tom Smith and George Falck allowed
penetrating balls to be fed through. Despite the superiority of Neston’s
play and the solid defence by Harry Bush, Tom McCurdy, Phil Connolly, Matt Hammond and keeper Chris Warbrick; it was Doncaster who managed to score first with a lobbed ball. Heads
stayed high as Neston were determined to come back, as several short corners were forced by Neston who brought on Jack Phillips
and Will Falck as subs half way through the first half. Eventually in the last
minute before half time Neston were successful in slotting home an equaliser. After a great team performance the score was
1-1.
The second half started with once again quick pace, both sides pushing to score an early goal. Only five minutes had gone, when the umpires declared the pitch too unsafe to continue and penalty flicks
were to finalise the game. Neston flickers Tom McCurdy, Tom Smith, James Rigby
and Harry Bush managed to score, whereas only one Doncaster player was successful in
directing the ball passed Chris Warbrick, to give a 4-1 victory to Neston.

2nd Round 9 Nov 2008
U18 Boys 3-2 Ben Rhydding
A strong Neston U18 side faced a equally
strong Ben Rhydding at home on a cold wet windy afternoon. It started well with both sides having an equal amount of
possession. A slip in the Neston defence allowed a well worked goal from Ben Ryhdding.
Constant battling in the midfield from
Matty Newall and James Rigby prevented the Yorkshire side from attacking. Numerous attacks from Neston remained
unconverted and the boys did well to hold it at 1-0 with great defensive work from Neston. But with inspirational
half time talks from Coach's Kevin and Lawrence, Neston were determined to make the game their's.
Neston's patience prevailed and with
accurate passing between Will Falck and James Rigby the ball found the back board from a George Falck finish. Neston dominated
the attack and with a well worked midfield move from the midfield, Tom Betts got the ball and slotted it past
the keeper.
With Neston's passion and desire the
boys held the opposition and from a great Tom Mothersdale and Andy Knight run down the left and a pass to the top of the D,
George Falck managed to put Neston 3-1 up. The game then changed and constant attacks from Ben Rhydding lead to a goal
and the game went to 3-2.
With ten minutes to go Neston held their
goal extremely well with great defensive play from McCurdy, Matthew-Jones, Hammond, Bush and Connolly. Time was
ticking away and with Neston's D, full of players, Chris Warbrick made some fantastic saves to prevent Ben Rhydding from scoring.
The final whistle blew and after a brilliant game of fast flowing hockey Neston were victorious after a great team performance
against a well drilled Ben Ryhdding side. This now takes them through to the 3rd round of the U18 Cup.

1st Round 5 Oct 2008
U18 Boys 5-2 City of Preston
After going out in the early stages of last years U18 cup, Neston are determined to go further this year and
it showed in this, the first round against a strong Preston side.
The game started at a high tempo, Neston dominating the play from inside their own half all the way into Preston’s 25. This high possession quickly paid dividends, Neston converting through a George Falck
goal, knocking back the guests. The boost in confidence spurred Neston on, gaining
plenty of free hits, long corners and penalty corners, one of which was converted by centre back Tom McCurdy, blasting a superb
drag flick in to the back of the net. Neston kept going from strength to strength,
keeping composure and not letting Preston have anything.
A third goal came from a great passage of play by Andy Knightdown the back line and slotted away by Tom Mothersdale. Unfortunately, Preston nicked a goal right before
the half time whistle leaving the scoreline 3:1 to Neston.
Knowing there was a chance Preston could work their way back into the game, Neston came sprinting out of the
blocks, not allowing Preston to gain any advantage.
This showed as another goal came from George Falck, his second, taking a little pressure off us. Neston undeterred kept their concentration, constantly pushing Preston
with a high work rate. A fifth goal came from Andy Knight, who had been having
a stormer of a game and came well deserved. Neston proceeded to play with composure,
but a slip in concentration allowed Preston to grab another goal, but it was too late, Neston
hung on for a well deserved win.
Final Score 5:2
Man of the match went to Tom McCurdy, who showed composure and discipline and played a key
role in the victory.
