Eddie Byrnes

Eddie Byrnes kindly gave this interview just before his trip down to Australia to visit his daughter in Sydney.  He has recently celebrated his 59th Birthday and says he "has a few more seasons left in him". He took up The Chairmans post from our very own Tim Brooker, a couple of years ago and has steered our Hockey Ship on a steady course, leading us with oratory skills that leave us spell bound, a little like his stick skills!

Always keen to pass on his view to others, Eddie has kindly answered the following questions

When did you first take up Hockey and where?

In 1972 at Bowdon HC in Cheshire!

What position do you play?

Generally in defence but I am a frustrated forward!  Notorious in my younger days for breaking from the back!

What is your favourite film?

The Dam Busters!

Who is the best Hockey player you have played with?

Robbie Smith ( Neston and England )in a Neston vets game!!!

What are you reading at the moment?

"My Life in Cricket" by Rev. David Shepherd

What other Sports do you play?

Tennis and Golf, I majored in soccer at Loughborough University!

What is your Top Tip in Hockey?

It`s a passing game ,keep possession as a team, at all costs!

You are married to Jan and have two daughters, Fiona and Sophie, what do they do when you are playing Hockey?

Jan  plays a bit of golf  and gardens!  Fiona is a Hairstylist in Newcastle and Sophie is an accountant, number crunches, currently downunder in Sydney, Australia, due back in the spring.

Your Philosophy of life?

Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

What is the best advice given to you?

No substitute for good honest endeavour!

Thanks Eddie, have a lovely time down under and see you in February fighting fit for a promotion push for that fabulous fifth team you Captain.
