Oxton 7's 1-3 Neston 6's

17th March 2007

On a Windy West Kirby Day, Neston took on local rivals Oxton in a must win game that would hopefully result in Neston getting promotion.  Everyone arrived which was all well and good, but some difficulty was had in getting into the Astro.  But with everyone in the cage after a bit of help from Super Steve Connolly lifting the Oxton keeper over the West Kirby fence, the game was underway.

It started off with Neston slightly surprised at what they were up against.  Oxton had a stronger team than our previous game and they started off with a few attacks that could have easily been a few goals of it wasn’t for Dan Power.  But with some great midfield work from Matt Hammond, Kenno and Moxy we managed to claim ourselves a short corner which Moxy converted to put Neston 1-0 up.  But the game really never got into a rhythm and it was a scrappy one with Neston knowing that they could have played much better.  This scrappiness caused Oxton to score a relatively easy goal.

However it wasn’t all bad news and 10 mins before half time Andy and Amjad managed to disrupt the defence leading to a great finish from Jackie P.

The second half started and the tension was building as everyone knew we had to at least win.  2-1 wasn’t a safe place and with constant Oxton attacks the game looked like it was going to go Oxton’s way.  With great defending from Craig, Phil and Tom, Oxton were having none of it.  Then with a disallowed goal from Oxton that was millimetres outside the Dee it looked like the luck was going Neston’s way!

With the attacks turning Neston’s way thanks to Tweeds and Jack Rowlands the game was getting better and after 3 consecutive short corners Moxy managed to claim himself a second.  The whistle blew and Neston were glad they got the win and 3 points but not the greatest game to finish on!  Now the problem was faced again, the journey up the enclosed cage fence faced us, but a good experience to finish on!  (By the way there was a gate round the side that Moxy, Craig and I got over in less than a minute, just to let you know!)

Finally I think Dave Tweedie deserves a big pat on the back for all his efforts in making my and all the other junior’s introduction to senior hockey a brilliant one!

Let’s just hope it can continue!

Neston 6's 2-0 Deeside Ramblers 7's

3rd March 2007

Neston got off to a good start due to Deeside’s goalkeeper arriving late and only coming on after 10 minutes. Andy Knight took advantage of this after simply dribbling the ball into the goal after tackling Deeside’s defense.

Deeside had a few rough players. George was tripped over when running into the ‘D’, Andy was winded after being elbowed when he scored, and Mocks and Will were both hit by high balls.

Neston played with great determination and aggression, and towards the end of the first half Neston found their second goal, thanks to a good ball in from the corner, which Mox stopped and hit with great precision.

In the second half Neston kept playing with determination, always pushing for the third goal. Unfortunately, after many attempts, the final whistle blew, with Neston narrowly missing out on a third goal. But Neston still walked away with a win, and the 3 points, which are highly valued coming towards the end of the season.

Rhyl 3's 5-0 Neston 6’s

10th February 2007

Neston were up against one of the strongest teams in the league, a new team which should be in a higher league, it’s just that all new teams must start in the bottom league. Neston also had a birthday boy on the team, Andy Knight, looking for his first goal for the 6’s, only to lose 5-0!

Neston put up a great performance to start with, but with Rhyl’s solid team they scored their first goal, a hard hit into the goal from outside the ‘D’ (and I’m not being biased!). Neston, a little frustrated, still put in 100% effort, but unfortunately the game didn’t turn round, Rhyl scoring another before half time.

Neston did have a couple of good chances at the end of the first half, with a few great crosses going into Rhyl’s ‘D’, but unfortunately non were able to find the goal.

The second half was much the same with Rhyl playing very well, scoring a further 3 goals. Neston were putting up a good fight, but Rhyl were just too good, and Neston were always second best, but not bad!

Neston 6’s 3-0 Urmston 5’s

3rd February 2007

Goal scorers; Will Falck, Pete Chester x 2

A wonderful day for hockey, but not the most wonderful performance of hockey from Neston. Straight from the start Neston had all the possession and the ball was virtually always in Urmston’s half. Neston were really unlucky on a number of occasions and had numerous shots saved or deflected. Neston started to get anxious that they hadn’t scored as they started the game with great expectations after beating Urmston 6 or 7 goals to nil earlier on in the season.

Fortunately, mid way through the half Neston finally managed to find the backboard with a sweep from Will, inside a messy ‘D’.

Half Time; Neston 6’s 1:0 Urmston 5’s

Thankfully, Neston had a better second half, playing the ball, square, across the pitch and ‘letting the ball do the work’ much more. Neston knew that 1:0 would not be an ideal result against second to bottom Urmston and mid way through the half Neston got another goal, thanks to a well picked up touch from Peter Chester from a hit into the ‘D’ by George.

Things looked brighter for Neston and with not long left Peter got another goal from a well performed short corner by the team which Peter managed to deflect into the goal.

Neston  4-4 Bramhall

13th January 2007

Goal scorers: George Falck x3, James Hartley

Team: Will Falck, George Falck, Harry Bush, Andy Knight, Jack Phillips, Pete Burke, James Hartley, Stewart Long, Dan Hayes, Dave Tweedie, Phil Connelly, Dan Power.

To be honest, Neston were not totally up to scratch, giving Bramhall a very sloppy goal to take them into the lead after 10 minutes. Neston instantly began to get irritated, especially as before hand Neston had just missed a few opportunities, which never got any further than Bramhalls solid centre backs.

Neston kept pushing forward after conceding their first goal, and it didn’t take long for Neston to pull one back after Andy Knight’s pass from the corner of the ‘D’ to George, who neatly pushed it in from the penalty spot.

The match started to look a bit better, with Neston starting to play some good hockey. Unfortunately, mid way through the first half, Jack Phillips picked up an injury, resulting in some of the team having to move positions. For some strange reason, Neston were not performing to well at all, giving away a further 3 goals before half time.

Half time: Neston 1: 4 Bramhall

Neston went back into the second half with great determination, as they knew that if they wanted to keep contending for promotion they would need to come out of this game with maximum points. Fortunately the team was back to normal with Jack back on and everyone in their normal positions. It didn’t take long for George to score his second goal,  a great ball played up to him by Harry Bush and George let the ball pass him, and with one touch swept it into the bottom left corner.

Neston then had a good spell with some great attacks, ending in George scoring his third goal thanks to another great set up by Harry, this time from a free hit just outside the D, bringing Neston back into the game. Again, Neston kept pushing forward, and with not long to go, James Hartley found the net from a short corner rebound, to bring the game back onto level terms.

Eventually the final whistle was blown and although Neston were unlucky to score a fifth late in the game, it was without doubt a great comeback and a thrilling game to watch.

Neston  v Chester

6th January 2007

Score: Neston 3-3 Chester

Goals: James Hartley, George Falck and Will Falck

Due to some available positions in higher teams, Neston had a relatively younger team compared to before Christmas. Tom Mothersdale, Andy Knight and Josh Lindsay all playing their second game for the 6’s.

The game got off to a fair start with the midfield giving some excellent through balls to our forwards. Unfortunately Chester had a few strong defenders preventing the attack from continuing once the through ball had been made. Neston seemed to have much more possession than Chester, but once Chester had the ball they were very good, thanks to Ben Duckworth of Neston 2’s who was asked to play for Chester as they only had 10 men. As a result of this Chester scored two goals, one set up by Ben, the second scored by Ben.

Half Time- Neston 0: 2 Chester

Not much happened in the first 2/3rds of the second half. Slowly Neston’s heads went down, and more and more opportunities were being wasted away by most of the team.

Neston began to get frustrated but thanks to some keen supporters we kept pushing. With 10 minutes left we had a spell of missed short corners but finally James Hartley managed to find himself in a perfect position where he was able to beautifully strike the ball inside a busy ‘D’. (1:2)

Suddenly Neston received a surge of energy and straight after Chester’s pushback Andy Knight dived in with a tackle and pushed the ball through to George Falck, allowing George to neatly push the ball into the goal. (2:2)

With about 6 minutes left, Neston knew they could be on to a winner, due to a disappointed Chester. Neston kept driving the ball into Chester’s half and with about 3 or 4 minutes remaining Will Falck managed to scramble the ball in from a very messy 6-yard area. (3:2)

Unfortunately nothing ever goes exactly to plan and in the last few minutes Chester converted the ball into Dan Power’s net. A really wonderful end to a match. Well done to all involved.
