Tony, thank you for giving this interview in between your time as Heswall
Golf Club Secretary and Grandfather to Nathan (who we have heard all about from his Uncle Greg). Tony, you are one of
the Legends of the club, Chairman back in the good old days of 1988 to 1991.
When did you start playing Hockey?
At school
a few years ago, my mother, who did not know a lot about hockey went to several sports shops before she found out they did
not sell left handed hockey stick!
Who have you played for?
At school,
Gravesend (Kent) before moving North, joined Neston in 1969 who at the time only had one team and selection was carried out
on a rota basis.
What Position?
One
armed bandit on the left wing before moving to inside forward where both brain and skill, were able to flourish, we played
five forwards, three half backs and two full back in those days.
What book are you reading at the moment?
Anything
that Tim or Faridah want me to read to Nathan!
.
What is your favourite film?
Oh!
Its got to be The Dambusters ( I still get emotional when Guy Gibsons dog gets run over)
What position do you play at the moment?
Anywhere
I like…. If I can get there!
Who is the best player you have played with or against?
G T Poole
would take a lot of beating and before that Donald Hughes legendary Welsh international.
Top Tip in Hockey?
Always bring
your own half time drink they don’t seem to provide oranges any more.
What other sports played?
Played
a lot of Cricket and Golf. I am also proud to record that I represented my local pub team at bar billiards before moving North
What Music do you like?
Listening to the Polperro
Fisherman singing sea shanties was outstanding I am only sorry we gave the c d to Greg for a birthday present and he seems
to have lost it.
Whats it like umpiring your sons at Hockey
?
I don’t think I have umpired my sons, I let them get on with it and umpire everyone else.
What does Mrs Brooker do when
your playing golf or umpiring?
Gets my kit ready for next weeks game?!
Who would you want in a fight on your side,
from NSWHC?
T.M.J who would know all the rules and have all the cards!
Future for NSWHC?
Four or Five
years ago I thought Neston were heading back to a one team Club. I am now optimistic that we are on the up and with our own
pitch North Premier should be a good and realistic goal within the next five years.
Thanks Tony, I am afraid it might be one of The Little Red Train Books again tonight!
