HA Vase 1/4 Final  11th March 2007

Neston South Wirral 4-1 Tring HC

On the day "Fabulous Willy" the Tibetian Terrier won Best in show at Crufts.  Fabulous Will Herzog did a great Terrier type job in Midfield.  A great individual goal from Ben Coppack early on followed by a short corner which enabled Lawrence McNeight to sweep it away for 2-0 at half time.

A Penalty Flick for an offence on Lawrence McNeight was put away by the same, to make it 3-0.  They came back ironically following some ill-discipline from Tring; a couple of yellow cards for back chat; and an open play goal meant it went to 3-1.  Ben Coppack made it secure with a few minutes left after a sublime pass from Mark Garrett, 4-1 and a great win.

Match Report from The Tring Website

HA Vase quarter final.
Neston 4 - 1 Tring

The second lengthy trip up north in a fortnight proved Tring's undoing as they were finally knocked out with a somewhat below par performance against a well organised opposition.

Neston started strongly and commanded play from the start. Tring were struggling to come to terms with the slow Neston pitch, seeing numerous passes getting intercepted. Neston scored twice in the 1st half, once from open play and once from a short corner.  Tring drove forward in the 2nd half and created a number of opportunities but failed to capitalise - an early goal at this point would have made a huge difference. In pushing forward Tring were caught at the back and following a tackle by Russell Abel on the opposition centre forward, Neston were awarded a soft Penalty Stroke which they scored to make it 3-0. Tring's frustrations were showing as decision after decision went in Neston's favour. Declan Kavanagh and Neil Chapman both got yellow cards and Tring were down to 9 men. Seemingly under the kosh, Tring then played their best hockey and spent lengthy periods camped in the opposition half. Tring scored their goal at this stage, a fast break from defence, through midfield led to Matt Hyde bagging a brilliantly taken goal. Panic started to spread through the Neston ranks with desperate pleas from their goal-keeper to keep calm. Tring pushed on and created more chances but unfortunately the goals did not come. Whilst playing with 9 men and driving forward, there was always a danger from Neston and sure enough, Tring left themselves exposed in defence and were finally caught on the break towards the end, giving the final score a slightly unfair look.

Coach Chris Bentley commented "That was a very brave performance from Tring and they can be very proud of the efforts they put in". Captain Ben Moorhouse commented, "Considering the difficult circumstances we faced at the beginning of the season where we had to build a team from scratch, to now be disappointed to lose in the quarters of this national tournament is testament to how far we have progressed this season. Next season bodes well".
