Captains Message July 2007
 
We're now at the stage where the early plans have been made for the new season fitness and training.

We as a committee and me as club captain of men's hockey are determined that all teams should do well in their respective leagues however of particular importance is the promotion of the 1st team. Last season saw success for the 2nd team winning their league and obtaining promotion and it is hoped that this will be the catalyst for more this season. 
 
Whilst the 1st team cup run was as exciting as it was disappointing, it is fair to say that the league form was not as we would have wanted and that we need to learn lessons from this. It is therefore with great excitement that we can welcome Andy Ible into the fold.  Andy will bring a wealth of hockey experience to the table together with a change in coaching style.
 
Andy will be coaching the 1st and 2nd team squads on Tuesday and will manage the 1st team being a permanent fixture on the pitch side on Saturdays, as well as trying to play in any men's matches that follow on from the 1st team at home. 
 
The section has made a significant financial commitment to secure the services of Andy for the coming season and it is expected that all 1st and 2nd team squad members will be available for every Tuesday Training and that only a family crisis/holiday or work disaster will keep you away.
 
The other area we are focusing on is fitness. I appreciate it doesn't seem to be the most appealing thought to most of us! but we are in competitive leagues and we must put in the relevant spade work in if we want to be succussfull. We all know the importance of fitness and how it can affect the result of games.
 
Fitness training starts on Thursday 19th July @ 7pm at the club on the grass and continues on Tuesday 24th same time and place, all members are welcome. This pattern of Tuesday's & Thursday's continues until September. It is appreciated that holidays fall over this time, however trainers do not take up much room in your suitcase and the sand is excellent stuff to run on. Again it is expected that those intending to play 1st team make every effort to be there for both sessions a week however a minimum of once a week and then doing your own training is acceptable.
 
Last season we did continue with the Thursday night sessions at the club with Ken Peers, on the Tennis courts.  We are hoping again to secure the services of Ken for this, contract negotiations are under way.
 
EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO FITNESS TRAINING REMEMBER THE 1ST OFFICIAL FRIENDLIES START ON 1st SEPTEMBER.
We have planned a 1st team squad session for Sunday 5th August @ the Rec between 2 - 4pm and a further one is planned for the following Saturday to enable everyone to get together. The intention of these sessions is to map out what is expected through the season. The intention is to pick a squad of approximately 25 for these sessions with a view to reducing that number for a final session at the start of September. If you are not on the invited list for this it is not the end of the world as form will always be brought to the attention of the selection committee and likewise being on the list guarantees nothing.

When did you start playing Hockey?

 

I started playing when I was 14 at Pensby School – I was a late starter.

The facilities were not great we had to practice on the School yard.

We did manage to beat Caldy though on their pitch – had to get that in!

 

Who have you played for?

 

Cheshire U18, South Wirral and Neston/South Wirral

 

What Positions have you played?

 

I was hoping this question wouldn’t come up…

Left wing, Right Wing, Inside left, Inside right, Centre Half/Mid, Left half, Right Half and Centre Back……..ZZZZZ….I reckon my best position is left half (as I am left handed) but never get to play there!  

 

What book are you reading at the moment?

 

Just finished Spy Catcher….it came out 20 years ago! .Just started The Rule of Four.

What is your favourite film?

 

Difficult question as I am a film buff. If pressed I would say the original Star Wars following by Gladiator and The Usual Suspects. 

 

What position do you play at the moment?

 

Centre Half/Mid I think it’s a defensive destroyer role!

 

Who is the best player you have played with or against?

 

 

The best I have played against was Bobby Crutchley I was 18 at the time and couldn’t get near him. I was supposed to be marking him and failed miserably.

The best I have played with is Tony Pickthall, always involved in a game, great passer of the ball and knitted defence and attack together well, couldn’t tackle though!!! Would also have to mention from my South Wirral days Pete Betts, a goal machine. 

 

Top Tip, in Hockey ?

 

Think about it!

 

Philosophy of life ?

 

Try hard and don’t give up!

 

What other sports played?

 

Football, used to play Badminton and Tennis but no time these days.

 

What Music do you like? 

 

Varied tastes really Pink Floyd, Killers, Kasabian, The Police, JK.

 

What are your duties going to be as Club Captain ?

 

Phew were to start. Simplistically to help all the sides in anyway I can and try to pick up were Tim left off.

 

What does your other half do when your playing hockey?

 

Tries to keep my two children entertained which is a tough job!

 

Who would you want in a fight on your side, and why,  from NSWHC.

 

Definitely Rob Young, preferably standing behind him on 16’s!.

 

Future for NSWHC ?

 

I think we are making good progress and I am confident that we can keep improving as a club in all areas. 

The Astro pitch at the club is a must for many reasons and

I reckon that will happen. I will say that the Junior section is fantastic and I am sure this will bear fruit in the senior sides.
