1st Round U15 Cup
Morecambe 0-4 Neston SW Badgers 4 Nov 2007
We arrived at Lancaster an hour before push back, we were
welcomed with a nice cold breeze, but soon warmed up nicely. After a very moving, positive speech from our coach
Tony Bush, the strong Neston side walked onto the pitch with high hopes, and a confident but not complacent attitude. At
the back we had a very good goalkeeper, but Chris Warbrick didn't get much of a chance to show off his good goalkeeping skills
as our solid team held Morecombe off very well, with wave after wave of attacks. Our
strong defence started off as (from left to right) Charlie Palin, playing a fantastic game, getting stuck in and holding the
left line very strongly with his low and solid tackles, then in the middle, we had Max Dutton, holding the last man role very
well, covering, wilst Tom McCurdy pushed forward, trying to move the game up the field, fortunately, whenever Morecombe did
break through, Bruno De Blaquier was there at right back, holding off Morecombe whilst the rest of our Neston side came
back to defend. After a while Bruno came off for a fiesty Tom Beaumont who surprised us all with his determination, concentration
and skill. Well done to the defence as you held your nerve throughout the strong attacks from Morecombe. Neston
had a very powerful midfield wich consisted of pace, stamina and skill, which managed to break through Morecombe's defence,
causing havoc for the opposition. The midfield had alot of players and subs, which allowed everybody to run their socks off,
which they definitely did. On the left was Chris Hall, who just would not stop attacking along the left wing, and he also
managed a few shots in the circle, including a slow motion swing and a goal from a well planned penalty corner!! Then in the
middle was Jack Rowland, with his power and pace he managed to penetrate the Morcombe defence causing mayhem in their 25 yard
area. Along side Jack in the middle was Arthur Bush, who certainly lived up to his name, after a small amount of time finding
himself in the middle of the park, Arthur held the midfield very well, tightening the pitch so that Morecombe couldn't smack
any wild balls through the middle. On the right hand side were two class players; including Rob Beswick who kept on supporting
the right hand side, and even after taking a ball to the face, he continued to support the wing. The second right midfielder
was Richard Capes, who used his size and skill to break through the Morecombe left hand defence. Our attack played
well together, James Knight, George Roberts, James Fennah and Scott Barry all put in good contributions, Knighty having a
few big swings at goal and George Roberts getting two goals, one including a volley on the line. James Fennah got a goal too,
whilst Scott was hungry for one, he didn't manage to score, but pushed the forwards on. Thankyou to everybody
who helped out and to Tony for his great coaching on the sidelines!! Well done to the squad who are now through to the second
round!!

2nd Round U15 Cup
Northern 4-7 Neston SW Badgers 25 November 2007
We
arrived at the Northern Club on what was a nice calm day, well that was before the match kicked!
Tony
Bush, our coach, had sent Captain Tom McCurdy to do the warm up, so we were all really up for it. This obviously helped
a great deal, a good decision. The match started and we didn’t really start with must of a good touch upfront which
led to a number of great opportunities to just slip away. A number of 1 on 1 missed even though there keeper was not really
at the level of his other team mates to be fair.
The
first goal came from Northern with a simple tap in on the near post. This really got us fired up for the occasion and we then
had another few awesome chances squandered. Some respect is given out to one James Knight who was brutally honest and said
" I want to come off i'am playing poo " Tony had no choice so on came Scott Barry. Soon after the mighty Neston on the ball
and broke down the pitch when the ball came to George Roberts ( me ) to hit a reverse stick shot which luckily hit the keepers
pad and flew into the net. So at one a piece the worst happens literally 2 minutes later they got another few at this point
we just wanted the first half to end! It did with the score at 3-1.
Tony
Bush the legend gave an awesome half time speech and told us how much he wanted us to win and how much better we are. So we
went out to win in the second half and we got off to a flying start with Callum Boothy scoring a wonderful slap to the
bottom corner. We were on the charge and then big jack rowlands scored a push into the side the keeper was wondering what
was going on at this point. So his team mates pushed on after conceding the equalizer and then again took the lead. But I
knew that are team spirit and general skills would come through and was I correct. OBVIOUSLY.
All
of a sudden we had about 80% of possession and we just kept pushing and pushing they broke we kept cool the goals just wouldn’t
stop going in. First with Jack getting another good hit into bottom corner for his second. When little Tom Beaumont scored
an identical goal to Jacks second Just to rub it in our super subs got two more great goals for us the first being Scott Barry
and the second from James fennah. The last goal of the match really summed up our performance with Hally whacking it directly
into the top corner with a sweet backhand this really made the opposition quiet.
I
would like to do a special paragraph about 2 special people from our team the first being Tony Bush. I mean what a guy. The
effort and determination he has for the whole squad is great and really boosts us. If we didn’t have a certain player
on the pitch I don’t fell we could have performed to our max. So this goes to tom McCurdy he played centre midfield
from Centre back and still was superb in his tackling and giving the ball off from midfield to our players.
WOW
WHAT A GAME!!!!!

3rd Round U15 Cup
Neston SW 6-1 Oxton 3rd Feb 2008
Match Report
Another not so sunny day was put out ahead of us as we arrived at Neston Recreation Centre. Sunday saw the game that
we had all been waiting for, the game in which spine's tingled, and in which we had to win!!
After a warm up which certainly was needed, and after a moving team talk from the one and only Tony Bush, we stepped
out onto the pitch, hoping, needing to win the game.
The first five minutes saw Oxton showing some strength, strength which I certainly didn't expect. But no team seems to
be strong enough to penetrate the Neston defence, consisting of Charlie Palin, Max Dutton, Tom McCurdy and Tom Beaumont. The
first goal came from James Knight on 14 minutes down our strong side, after some good runs from Richard Capes. The uproar
from the sidelines made the team shiver, as we were 1-0 up against Oxton!!! Not too long later at 20 minutes Oxton managed
to win a penalty corner against us, Callum Mc put it away well, setting the score to one a piece. This sent us back out, wanting
to win this game more than ever! Within one minute we were up again, some good hockey, playing together as a team, through
the midfield and along the wings, Arthur Bush in open play. Considering the manager had told him to be a defensive midfielder,
he netted a great goal form the top of the D. This goal released some of the tension, but still Neston carried on
plying forward, hungry for another goal. The midfield played well together, transferring the ball around the pitch.
Richard Capes, Arthur Bush, Chris Hall and James Knight were extremely useful, against a pre match North West tracksuited
Oxton midfield. Coming up towards half time, Oxton had chances few and far between, as unbiased as this may sound, Neston
dominated the rest of the first half. The next goal came from an on form Scott Barry at 29 minutes and then another sublime
George Roberts reverse low backhand strick just before half time, to make it 4-1 as we went to half time. This really
did release pressure, but we couldn't let the scoreline get to us, we had to stay composed. Fortunately we did, and after
another moving talk at half time and some good pointers from Ken Gardiner the Club Captain we walked back out onto the pitch
with high hopes.
The second half saw some more good hockey produced by Neston, plenty of teamwork really showed Oxton how to play hockey.
Scott Barry continued where we left off and on 42 minutes he slotted away another one to make it 5-1. Chris Hall did't
want to lose out and two minutes later made it 6-1. Rob Beswick came on for Richard Capes and did well in a more defensive
role. Tom McCurdy went down with a big hit to the knee and he came off and we lost a little shape. Bruno
deBlaquire came on and held the defence well. James Fennah came on for Scott Barry and caused some headaches for the
Oxton.
Neston kept going at Oxton, unfortunately not managing to get a well planned penalty corner which we were all desperate
to show off to Oxton. Tom Beaumont stepped into my centre back role with Max Dutton, whilst Bruno stepped out to right
back. The defence then played well, as Oxton had a number of shots towards the end, but our superb goalkeepers Chris Warbrick
and Alex Davis soon saw an end to any hope that Oxton had of getting a second goal. Alex Davies came on with ten minutes
to go and probably had as much to do as Warby had in the entire game!
Sunday was an absolutely fantastic day, as out biggest rivals Oxton were beaten 6-1. Neston are now through to the last
16 in the England Hockey National Cup. Well done boys, it's certainly deserved! Thank you to Tony Bush for superb coaching,
Kenny Gardiner, Pete Chester and Martin Bryceland and to all the players for dedication and commitment, Rich Lowry for umpiring
and to the support received on Sunday!
WEL DONE NESTON!!!

4th Round U15 Cup
Doncaster 3-3 NSW 9th Mar 2008
On a bright and sunny Sunday morning, in the early hours might I
say! Neston U15’s met up to travel to Doncaster in the 4th round of the National Cup; this round was the
last sixteen teams in England!
As we got to Doncaster, we warmed up as usual and found out that the pitch was water based, as exciting
as that was, it was a very small disadvantage as not many players on our side had played on that kind of pitch. We got on
and started knocking balls around and found that everyone was comfortable with the pitch.
Doncaster pushed back at the start and we saw a well organised Doncaster side come at us with strength,
but the fresh and well spirited Neston side started forcing the game back at them, starting to dominate the first few minutes.
We managed to win a corner early on, this set our hopes high as George Roberts stepped up at the top of the D for a strike,
the ball came out to him and he rocketed it at goal, unfortunately the ball was deflected just wide.
After some more good runs from Richard Capes up the right hand side and James Knight up the left, ‘Donny’
as they quite amusingly called themselves came back and managed to grab a goal. ‘Nessy’ (Neston) if we are going
by Doncaster language suddenly felt the pressure and heads started to drop, but after encouraging words throughout the team,
the moral was boosted and off we went again. Neston won another penalty corner and I (Tom McCurdy) stepped forward for a drag
flick. The ball came out well by Chris Hall and I took my flick, unfortunately the keeper was straight behind the flick, and
the ton of power behind the ball was no problem for an extremely big goalie. (Had to get that in). Doncaster came back at
Neston, showing very good skill and team play against us, having one or two corners and chances, but Neston didn’t stop.
The tackles coming from the defence were solid. We kept making powerful runs
through the midfield and giving great balls to the forwards. Unfortunately not many of those chances were finished in the
first few minutes of the game.
As we kept forcing at Doncaster, we won another corner, this time the mighty Arthur Bush, who was having
a great game, stepped up for it. He launched the ball at the goal, once again the keeper got behind it, but it rebounded straight
back to Arthur, in which he did not hesitate to cream the skin off the ball and smash it into the backboard. I don’t
think I’ve heard such a loud bang from a shot on goal!
Neston’s hopes were boosted once again as we were back in the game! Carrying on playing top quality
end to end hockey, Neston worked so hard to keep possession. Chris Hall made some good runs through the middle of the pitch
with Arthur, George and I. Jack Rowland came on not too long later and had a very good run, taking on four players and shooting
at the top of the D. His terrible hit (sorry Jack) was a ‘topper’ managing to bounce over the keeper with good
pace and landing in the back of the goal. 2-1 up and I was thinking about retracting my earlier statement of: ‘terrible
hit’.
I felt Neston sat back a little bit, not quite creating as many chances as they previously had, and that
was when Doncaster broke through our defence and took a goal. 2-2 just before the end of half time.
As half time approached I could see Neston heads dropping, still playing good hockey, but the spirit was
not as bubbly as it had been. As half time approached we walked off for a drink and a well deserved rest, unfortunately not
lasting for too long.
Neston seemed to be under the cosh a lot more in the second half, Tom Beaumont had a good game, holding
off attacks from down our right, unfortunately when Doncaster did break through they took their chances well. Max Dutton,
Charlie Palin and Bruno De Blaquiere all played well, cleaning up at the back. But Doncaster’s skill managed to just
about pierce through the defence. Doncaster scored third goal, putting them ahead by one.
Neston really wanted this, as you could easily tell by the momentum that we started playing with! After
trying and working so hard to create more chances a couple came, the one in which we scored our equaliser came from Knighty
himself, he had a good run in the D, taking on the goalkeeper putting the ball onto his reverse side. As I saw James’
stick swing up into the air my life flashed before my eyes, with not long left to play this goal was so crucial. I can honestly
remember saying to myself, if he misses he dies. But James being James smacked it reverse into the backboard. The uproar from
the crowd and Neston players was phenomenal! We had equalised, we were still in it!
More and more attacks came from each side, and at the last minute Doncaster got a penalty corner against
us. Jack Rowland used his pace to get out, but unfortunately forgot that hockey
was played with sticks and not feet, so less then a second later he was walking off the pitch due to a yellow card. The final
whistle then blew.
I feel that our heads dropped completely at this point, whereas Doncaster were ecstatic the they were still
in the game. It went to flicks and five players stood up to take them. Unfortunately only Arthur and I scored the flicks,
but credit goes to George Roberts, Max Dutton and Tom Beaumont who were big enough to stand on the spot and take a penalty.
From experience I can say that it is extremely nerve racking, and that I missed my first flick only a week ago. Warby did
a fine job in goal, flying through the air like a raised salmon, saving a flick, another of theirs was disallowed as it was
more of a ten yard run up and a five yard drag and then flick.
Doncaster beat us 3-2 on flicks, and fair play to them, they did a fantastic job of holding off a very good
Neston side.
For those who missed the flicks, you need to bear in mind that it was your first time in match conditions.
Sh** happens in life, it’s how you deal with it that determines how good of a sportsman you are, and well done for being
man enough in the first place to stand up for one.
Well done to all players who showed dedication and commitment throughout this tournament. Thanks goes to
the Legendary Tony Bush for his superb coaching in the ‘Tony Bush School of Hockey’ and to all those parents who
got us around the world and back in time for school the next day.
Every player and parent should be extremely proud of this squad as we made it to the fourth round, leaving
only sixteen teams from sixty four teams left on the first attempt ever at the Boys U15 National Cup.
It was an honour being a player and captain of this side, and I am so pleased to be able to say that we
all did so well. It has never been about one individual player in this tournament,
that doesn’t win games, it’s the fact that we played as a team that got us so far! Well done boys!
